Hi! My name is Katelyn...
I have always loved learning and reminiscing about the past as well as organizing. Lucky for me, this combination was the perfect fit for a career as an archivist!
Now, I help individuals, families, and small cultural heritage institutions preserve their own memorabilia and histories through doing and teaching archival preservation!
"Big events in history are often retold and saved, but local, individual stories frequently get lost to time. These stories capture the every day and the very things that define the human experience. I have the best job in the world in that I am trusted with people's memories. I get to watch babies come home, kids grow up, communities come together to celebrate and carry out long held traditions. Life being lived is a beautiful thing, and I am forever grateful that I get to help preserve it for those who lived it and the generations to come. This is why the work that public history institutions and individual archivists do is so important. I truly believe that everyone has a story worth saving."
My Story
I arrived to college as an undeclared major, having so many interests that it seemed like an impossible task to narrow down to one thing to do for the rest of my life.
I took a public history class to fulfill some requirements and FELL IN LOVE! I had never experienced history in this way before, acting as a sleuth to dig through records, view different view points, and question narratives that have always been told.
Growing up in a small town in rural Northern New York with close ties to family who have lived on the same lands for many generations, I have always had an interest in family and local history. I also grew up going to museums and libraries on a regular basis, trips I always loved! The public history and museum related classes that I took in college gave me the space to learn how to record, save, and retell the stories of families and small communities. It also inspired me to go on to get my Master's degree to do this very work.
After nearly a decade of working professionally as an archivist, in addition to volunteering in institutions, I found that options for professional services were often missing or unattainable for these small organizations. I also felt that there was a gap in affordable services that abide by best practices for individuals. After moving back to the North Country after years of being away for schooling and work, it seemed like the perfect time to make this dream to help others a reality, and I founded Something Treasured LLC.
